Sir John Radcliffe NHS hospital pioneers new remote monitoring system for high risk cardiac patients

Remote technology specialist Medify Solutions today announced a ground breaking contract to supply the Sir John Radcliffe NHS hospital in Oxford with its ‘real time’ remote access application to support a new 24/7 patient monitoring system.

The hospital will be using the new Medify remote application as part of its work in monitoring high-risk patients with a wide range of chronic and life threatening conditions such as diabetes and chronic heart failure.

Patients will wear a ‘wireless body vest ‘, which monitors them on a continuous basis to check on heart rate, and other functions of the autonomous nervous system to check for tell tale signs of potential problems. The information captured by the high tech body vest is transmitted via Medify’s remote technology to a computer in a monitoring centre where carers and doctors can analyse the results and then use them to give patients advice on how to manage their condition through drug prescribing and lifestyle changes.

Commenting on the trial Paul Johnson , director of the Xenetec Ltd telemonitoring centre at the Radcliffe hospital said.

“This is a real breakthrough in the use of remote monitoring of high risk patients. Medify has provided the last piece of the jigsaw in allowing us to transmit the data from the patient’s wireless body vest to a computer that will analyse the information and produce graphs and pictures that we can use to explain to patients. We will run the trail for about 3 months to iron out any operational issues and then we hope to widen this out to much wider groups of patients, both from the Radcliffe hospital and further afield.”

With the trend within the NHS towards greater self-management of long term conditions the new technology could have considerable usage across the UK and overseas as a way of providing early warnings of risks and giving patients guidance on beneficial lifestyle and diet changes.

Commenting on the contract Jonathon Bryant, CEO of Medify Solutions, said.

“ We are really pleased to be working with the Sir John Radcliffe and Xenetec Ltd on this exciting project. Our remote technology has many applications and this is a clear demonstration of its versatility in terms of operating with other systems. The potential for remote monitoring of patients is very large and we believe that once other parts of the NHS see the results of this trial they will be keen to apply it to their own particular local plans for the management of long term conditions.”
