Country Doctors Association
When the Dispensing Doctors Association decided in an internecine war in 1997 to ally itself closely to both the GPC and the pharmacists a clear hiatus was left in dispensing and rural medical politics. No longer was there a truly independent voice fighting for and promoting dispensing practice. The gap had to be filled. There have been many changes in the medico-political environment and, constrained by its new rules and agreements, the DDA Ltd is unable to take advantage of them. For instance, the old NHS maxim that the pharmacist shall dispense and the doctor prescribe has been smashed as chemists have been granted prescribing rights. The DDA Ltd threw away any opportunity of campaigning for an extension of dispensing by doctors when they agreed to ban market town doctors from applying to dispense. The Country Doctors Association is the only group in an ideal position to continue that fight. The Country Doctors Association was formed in 1998 with the remit of encompassing the whole sphere of interest of rural and market town general practice with all the special characteristics which are not found in urban areas:
Few of these have been adequately addressed for rural doctors who often feel left out by their mainly urban based political representatives. Join the CDA and let's sort it out! Rural staff have their own problems and needs and will be very welcome to join the CDA as Associate members. We believe that with your help we can work together for the betterment of rural practice and rural patients.
