HANDS OF TIME: THE TELL-TALE SIGNS OF AGEING

Leading cosmetic surgeons address the latest techniques in hand rejuvenation

London - 19 July, 2005 London Plastic Surgery Associates (www.lpsa.co.uk <http://www.lpsa.co.uk/> ), a leading cosmetic surgery clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive care in the field of plastic surgery, today addressed the latest techniques in hand rejuvenation.

According to Simon Withey, consultant plastic surgeon and LPSA founding partner; ³While many people have cosmetic surgery to make their face look younger, their hands still may reveal their age. When hands look years older than the face, it can be a tell-tale sign that the person has had facial rejuvenation surgery.²

The cumulative effects of aging, sun and exposure to chemicals are brown spots, uneven pigmentation, skin cancers, thinning skin, and prominent veins. As women enter menopause, dropping levels of oestrogen contribute further to thinning and drying of the skin.

For those who are concerned about the appearance of their hands, there are steps that can help prevent and even partially reverse the signs of aging.

At LPSA, a private practice founded by teaching hospital consultants who are all members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), Structural Fat Grafting or "LipoStructure" can be an effective treatment option.

According to Patrick Mallucci, consultant plastic surgeon and LPSA co-Founder; Lipostructure, taking fat from one part of the body and injecting it into the back of the hands (usually during more than one session), can restore the soft tissue that is lost with age and can also fill out the grooves between the bones. It is important that this procedure be done by a qualified plastic surgeon with a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the hands.

Another cosmetic procedure uses Restylane Vital, a crystal clear gel which is injected into the dermis to moisturise the patients¹ own skin from within. The active ingredient, hyaluronic acid (HA), is found naturally in the body but its production decreases with time. Restylane Vital stimulates skin cell activity to increase the production of collagen and elastin, so hands look plump and youthful.

According to Marie Duckett, a Registered Nurse at LPSA-based Fiona & Marie Aesthetics; Restylane Vital is a great alternative for those who want to encourage their own bodies to continue producing the necessary elements already present in younger skin, and at the same time obtain immediate results in hand rejuvenation."

According to Simon Withey; "The hands are an expressive part of our bodies, we use them to communicate, nurture and create. Whether we think about it or not, our hands are on display all the time. Many patients elect to have their hands rejuvenated at the same time as they have their faces lifted, so that their results will look absolutely natural."
